All of our construction is of the highest quality. Northern Sun Woodworks uses only the finest materials and time-honored tools and techniques to create our custom projects and our component products. There are no visible fasteners in our treads, for instance, because they are fastened from the bottom up, and each tread is held by at least 14 screws. In many cases, newel post connections are made using our own custom-fabricated steel brackets, so they remain rigid for many years. We often use materials which are rare in this application, such as Curly Maple or Birdseye Maple and we also offer our unique Captured Bark Rustic Woods, which are very popular in post-frame and log structures and in rustic interiors.

Stairs are load bearing and require careful integration with the surrounding structure. We can work with the general contractor to make sure that the framing and support structure are accurately prepared to receive a new staircase. Provisions can then be made to ensure that the proper case opening is accounted for, and sufficient support is provided to anchor newel posts, balcony rails and other components to structural members.

Northern Sun Woodworks will travel to install our stairs, and we have installed them in several states. The time required for installation can vary according to the complexity of the project, but most stairs are installed in 1 to 4 days.

Our custom-designed and crafted architectural elements made with exotic American woods are competitively priced as well. We routinely bid against the major stair companies and have never lost a bid based on cost. Northern Sun Woodworks can do any preliminary project work through long distance communications, construct it to specification in our shop, then ship and install the project on site.

No job is too complicated for Northern Sun Woodworks. We welcome the challenge of undertaking projects that are beyond the abilities of other artisans. The Victorian 180 degree, two-landing staircase (project 7 in our gallery) is a good example. This project was very labor-intensive and required a great deal of design experience and customer interaction. An ordinary cabinet shop, intent on a quick turn-around, would not have been able to deliver a project of this complexity.

Instead of settling for a standard pre-fabricated staircase, contact Northern Sun Woodworks. Let us show you the difference that a custom-built staircase can make in your quality of life and in the beauty and value of your home.
